/homepages/37/d484552600/htdocs/clickandbuilds/WordPress/MyBlog/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/YaoPicture.jpgMy name is Yao Lydia and I’m a former student at Florida A&M University (FAMU). Before I began college, I suffered the loss of my father

my senior year in high school when I was only 16. Losing my father, an activist educator in the South Florida and Washington, DC communities who was my greatest supporter was very hard for me. Once I began college, I also lost my uncle, cousins, and then my grandmother.

I have always taken my education seriously, maintaining a 3.4 GPA all throughout high school; however, due to post traumatic stress, I wasn’t able to keep up with the rigor of college and was forced to leave. I am now planning to attend Broward College to bring my GPA up and receive an Associates Degree before I return to Florida A&M. But I am in debt to the university and in order to receive my transcript and resume classes, I have to pay back the amount of money that I owe, which now stands at $6800. My current college GPA will not allow for a Federal loan and after searching and searching, I found that trying to get a co-signer for a private loan was an even bigger challenge. A private loan would also accumulate more debt once I have graduated and I wish to avoid that.

Since leaving college, I have sought out grief counseling to help deal with the losses in my family and to also gain closure. I am starting this SCHOLARgifts campaign so that I can raise the funds to pay back what I owe to the university and continue my education. Although I have requested only $1500 in donations at this time, it is critical that I raise the total amount needed ($6800), in order to reenter college.  Furthermore, I wish to make myself and my family proud. My plan is to prove I have learned to focus my skills and talent by receiving an Associates Degree in Communications/Business. This way I, Yao Lydia, will continue my education and graduate with a Masters of Science in Journalism Degree from the illustrious Florida A&M University.

I am preparing to become the CEO and owner of my very own media production company by writing my way to success. You have no idea how much your kind contributions will mean to me. But to show my gratitude I am providing incentives for various levels of support. Your seeds of generosity are making a harvest in the life of a promising individual and I simply cannot thank you enough.

Just as an aside, I am a young Black man who is very much committed to education, have never been involved in the criminal justice system, and want to make my family and community proud of me.  I particularly want to reach out to all the activist friends of my father who worked closely with him in the civil rights, Pan-Africanist, and reparations movements. I would like his spirit to live on through me, but I must first get back in college!

Once again, thank you for all of your kindness and donations and may God continue to bless you as you have blessed me.

With Gratitude and Thanks,

Yao
